What is an essay

An essay usually refers to a piece of non-fiction but it is not always fabricated (Taft College). An essay consists of a beginning (introduction), a middle (body), and an end (conclusion). It is usually written in three or more paragraphs. A good essay consists of a good explanation and arguments to support a point.

Types of Essay:
The most common types of essay are:

Narrative essay: This type of essay narrates an experience in the form of a story. Usually the end of the essay tells what was learned from that experience.

Descriptive essay: A descriptive essay tells an experience in detail. This type of essay consists of sharp observations and detailed descriptions.

Illustrative essay: An illustrative essay uses examples to illustrate a point. The examples may be brief of comprehensive, but are always specific and to the point.

Comparative essay: This kind of essay consists of comparison. Usually facts are used to make the comparison valid. There are two ways to write a comparative essay. Either one topic is described at a time followed by the other or both are compared together in a series of paragraphs.

Persuasive essay: The main purpose of a persuasive essay is to convince the reader to agree with your idea. This requires the author to provide a lot of support to the argument to successfully persuade the reader to agree with the point.
