What is an Argumentative Essay?
Argumentative essays are written to express a one sided perspective on a particular subject. The structure of an essay consisting of an argument is similar to other types of essays. The difference is that an essay consisting of an argument provides some facts about a specific point of view and tries to persuade the reader. Following are certain basic guidelines for writing an argumentative essay.
Select a Topic
Select a topic that consists of issues. Do not select overly done topics such as an abortion, death sentence as these topics are written extensively and the readers may already have sufficient knowledge about such topics making them difficult to convince. Try to select a distinctive topic to create interest among the readers.
Writing a Thesis Statement
A thesis statement consists of one sentence that sums up the main topic for an essay. The thesis should consist of the topic and which side of the issue will be argued.
Write an Introduction
This is where you begin an essay. An introduction should be an attention getter. Begin by a question or a quotation. The last sentence of the introduction part should consist of a thesis statement.
Write the Main Body
A main body should consist of at least three paragraphs for supporting the thesis. It is important to provide facts and figures to support your argument with illustration of examples.
Write a Conclusion
Sum up your essay with key points and restate the thesis statement. Avoid expressing new ideas in conclusion paragraph. Avoid contradicting any information that has been stated in the body.
Writing an argumentative essay is quite tricky as you must possess the necessary skill to convince your readers about your point of views. Once you become accustomed it should not be a big problem.
