Stop plagiarizing…..Get original!!
The term plagiarism primarily means using another’s words, thoughts or ideas and passing it out as your own without stating or mentioning the original author’s name. The word plagiarism is derived from the Latin word plagiaries which mean abducting or snatching. The internet has become the biggest source of plagiarism now a days while writing term papers, essays, dissertations, research reports etc, the reason being its cheap easy accessibility that too on the click of a button.
In order to avoid plagiarism the most common technique used is paraphrasing, but without giving due credit to the original author it’s also considered as a breach over a person’s intellectual property. Plagiarism could result in different types of punishment, sometimes it also ends up in some kind of a legal punishment. Some of the consequences of plagiarism are discussed below:
Personal Consequences:
The biggest disadvantages of plagiarism is that the person’s own level of critical and analytical thinking damages. Easy access of material from various sources gives them the privilege to copy the desired content but at the same time it has a very serious effect on the individual’s mental capability. It spoils the individual’s intent of researching and writing, which can have an everlasting impact on their future life. On the personal level it can be quiet embarrassing while getting caught because of plagiarism.
Student Consequences of Plagiarism:
At student level, plagiarized content could be punished in the form of failing in an assignment, getting a low grade, loss of confidence from the teacher, probation, and in some extreme cases expulsion from the institution. As written before the biggest disadvantage of plagiarism is that the writers lose their own creativity and keep on relying on plagiarized material.
Personal Image:
Stealing or copying someone else’s work also hurts that individual’s integrity, loss of trust, and reliability also gets damaged. On the other hand it also destroys an individual’s capability to write, think and research. On many occasions plagiarism is confused with inspiration. Inspiration is getting influenced or impressed by an idea or thought and acknowledging the original creator of that idea with proper referencing. Not to mention when an individual develops the habit of plagiarizing they become extremely lethargic both mentally and physically, and unintentionally hurt their own potential.
Plagiarism at Professional Level:
Plagiarism is a criminal act at any level, but especially at the professional level it’s next to committing suicide. A person who has a habit of plagiarizing can hurt the organization at a greater degree, especially in a creative job like journalism. It could hurt the newspaper or TV channel’s image, their credibility and confidence in public would also be on stake.
